Leonardo da Vinci's notebook of natural science observations and notes, known as the Leicester Codex, was created in Milan between 1506 and 1510. The manuscript is a 72-page notebook made up of 18 sheets of paper that are written on both sides. The treatise was written by Leonardo in his peculiar "mirror" script, which can only be read with a mirror.

The Codex opens each chapter with a call to the next generation and a convincing argument that the world is one "living organism." Leonardo believed that water was the planet's "blood," the earth's surface its "body," and the air its "soul."

Bill Gates, who paid $30.8 million for the book, is currently the proprietor of The Leicester Codex.
